So I have just read that Thompson are going to be flying on cooking oil instead of regular Jet A1 fuel. At first I thought it was fantastic - we have finally succumbed to using a more cleaner fuel. I wonder how this happened? It seems that everyone has firmly backed up this decision, including the British Government. Without sounding cynical, I thought that there must have been some other motive for granting this decision rather than just 'tackling climate change' - money motivated? I am still not sure...

Nevertheless, European airlines, biofuel producers and the EU Commission last week signed up to produce 2m tonnes of biofuel for aviation by 2020. I am slightly concerned that through all the production of this oil, further environmental damage will be incurred as it seems A LOT is needed. Coupled with the growing population and cheap package deals being offered, we will be needing an increasing amount of fuel.

However, after researching, this decision seems to have been one the better ones made so far regarding steps towards curbing climate change:

Vegetable oil (if that is what they are using) is 100% carbon neutral and emits no sulfar! Horah!

So could you be flying guilt free? Not just yet, plans are still in the early stages as planes will be running on mostly Jet A1 fuel mixed with a bit of biofuel. Fingers crossed that we can keep researching and implimenting further plans so that all modes of transport can be running as energy efficient as soon as possible.
